Claude Monet

Time Duration:

15 min. --> Introduce Monet's art and the style of impressionism
30 min. --> Students recreate a copy of one of Monet's paintings

Objective:

Students will be able to recognize the difference between Impressionism and other artistic styles
Students will practice Impressionism by completing impressionist works of their own.

Materials:

  • Monet powerpoint and notes
  • Monet posters, laminated
  • White paper
  • Sponges, cut into smaller pieces
  • Paper plates
  • Paint

Technology:

  • PowerPoint

Activities:

Day 1:
  • Introduce Monet's art and the style of impressionism (powerpoint). Students take notes
  • Compare and contrast the photographs in the powerpoint with the impressionism style paintings of the same scene.
  • Students will work in groups at their tables, sharing paint, sponges and a poster
  • hand out Monet Posters. Each table will do a different Monet piece.
  • have a student hand out plates and sponges to each table.
  • Take paint around to each of the individual tables and students will begin working.
    • walk around while students are painting to question, and remind them to dab the sponge, not smear it.
  • As students finish they will clean up their tables, wash out their sponges and make sure they double check to clean everything.

Evaluate:

  • Students will be evaulated with questioning regarding what impressionism is.
  • Students impressionism paintings will be graded on effort and practicing the appropriate techniques.
