35 min. --> Scholastic Art Magazine: "Rembrandt Master of Light" and packet work

Objective:

Students will determine how Rembrandt used light in his paintings.

Activities:

Day 1:
  • Journal: (have The Syndics of Drapers' Guild up on the SmartBoard) Describe the scene. Use terms from our vocabulary packet.
  • Present Rembrandt art with PowerPoint. Double check students are completing their note taking guide as the class period progresses.

Day 2:
  • Journal: Which piece of Rembrandt's art was your favorite? How did Rembrandt use light in that painting?
  • Students take Quiz #3 with senteo clickers.
    • absent students will take on paper when they return
  • Discuss Quiz results
  • Hand out the Scholastic Art Magazine and the Master of Light Packets.
  • Read through the first section of the Scholastic Art Magazine with students. Discuss the types of light in each of the Self Portraits, and the effects the light has on the scene, helping students with the first page of the packet.
  • Students will have the remainder of the class period to finish reading the magazine and complete the packet in groups.
  • Homework: Blog comment on http://mmshumanities.blogspot.com/
    • Master of Light: Rembrandt is known as the Master of Light, if you were an artist, what would you be known as a Master of and why?

      Write 3-4 complete sentences to answer the question. DUE Friday, March 4th

      Example: I would be Miss Klungseth, Master of Stick People. I am an excellent stick person artist. I have perfected my stick people drawing skills over the years, and have really grown into an artist.

Evaluate:

  • The lesson was evaluated using the "Rembrandt: Master of Light" packet and magazine activity.
  • A quiz was also given over the first 3 artists (DaVinci, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt)
  • Blog response on students' choice of Mastery.
