Day 1:
  • Journal: Students will write what they think the meaning behind the song, "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" by Don McLean as they listen to it.
  • Pair students. Each student needs a computer.
  • 1 student logs on to the website http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/van_gogh/index.html
  • 1 student opens the guide in the shared folder.
  • The students work as a team to read through the website and find the answers to the guide and sequence Van Gogh's life.
  • When students have finished they print out their guide and hand it it. These will be corrected in class next time.
  • Extra classtime will be spent by the students recreating "Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh.
    • Recreations due next class period.

Day 2:
  • Journal: As you listen to "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" a second time, how does your journal from yesterday change now that you know what you do about Vincent Van Gogh's life?
  • Discuss Journal question with students.
  • Hand back student's assignments from last time.
    • Correct/Discuss in class. Students correct their own with their partner
  • view powerpoint with Vincent's art. While going through the powerpoint question students about the sequence of events in Vincent's life and how they can see his life reflected in his art.
    • remind students to take notes on their data sheet.
  • Exit Slip: How does Vincent Van Gogh create meaning in his work?

Evaluate:

  • The lesson was evaluated using the online activity guide.
  • Students' Starry Night recreations were graded with the rubric at the end of the online activity guide.
